Hi, I'm looking into getting a new camera and I'm basicaly torn between the D40, and the 70s. I've heard that Nikon plans to discontinue the 50 and 70s and their replacements are the 40 and the 80. What are your guy's opinions on which camera to go with? I'm kind of leaning toward the 70s because of all its options, but I'm looking at the 40 because of its newer processor. Also, do you guys have any thoughts on the D50?

I wouldn't go with the D40 (which is replacing the D50) because it is a VERY entry level camera, and will only work with AF-S AF lenses. If you want a cheaper camera get the D50 (I have one and absolutely love it with the exception of FPS) while there is still some left.

If I was currently in the market for a lower price camera though I would get the D80, it has everything the D50/70 does and even quite a few new little items. The best thing to do is go down to a local camera store and try them all out and choose the one that fits you the best.

The D40 is slightly crippled compared to the D50 which is more than slightly crippled compared to the D70/D70s.

Spend the extra money and get the D70/D70s...if you don't know why then look in this forum because the D50 to D70 comparison has been done a ton of times.

You could use the search function but you are a fucking dirt bag who doesn't have a sub or av. I honestly don't know why I am even responding to you....

Thanks for the responses! I'm not really in the market for the D80, as much as I'd like to be I just don't have the funds at the moment.

Yes, I'm a dirt bag who doesn't have a sub, but I enjoy all the work you guys post up, which is why I'm coming to you for the questions. :hs:

D70s FTW. I have one and I feel like if I had gotten the D50 I would've been left wanting more. Besides, with the release of the D80, the prices have dropped dramatically. You should try to get one before they discontinue them (if they haven't already).

The D50 has a better sensor than the D70/D70s. Hope you take that into consideration.

dont go for d40. some reviews say that the 18-55 lense which comes with the d50 is poor. now that the d40 and 80 have replaced the older ones, there might be good deals on the 70s on ebay etc. thats what ill go for. my dad has the 200, its pretty sweet...

the 18-55 is a decent lense. Better than Canon's variation that's for sure.
