Which muscle groups go well together?

    What is are good groups of muscles to work out on the same day? Currently I started going to the gym and planned on 4 times a week, with Sun,Mon,Wed,Thurs as gym days.

    I was checking on exrx (per the sticky) to educate myself on workout routines, and I saw thier ABXABXX 2day split template which looked to fit what I was going for. I was thinking about going with the Upper/Lower split, but it seems like that might be overdoing it working out the whole upper body one day, and likewise for the lower. Is this a sound routine, or should I try to break it down more and do Arms/Shoulders, Chest/back, Legs. or something of the sort.

    Or if someone could suggest a group of muscles to work out on the same day that would be great too. I feel so lost when it comes to working out, and its hard to find good material to learn about it when many sources contradict the other.

    what if I dont want to be a body builder, just want to put on muscle to help burn fat, does his routine still apply?

    does anybody incorporate their shoulder work into their back/chest workouts?

    ex:
    back/bi workout + rear delts

    chest/tri workout + front + side delts

    they seem fairly related to me

    i've tried a bunch of 4 day routines and as a noob I'm most comfortable with a push/pull routine... bodypart splits aren't as much fun because you spend less time doing the fun stuff like squats and deadlifts.

    Yes, rear delts get hit on my pull days with front and lateral delt get hit on push days. No need for a seperate shoulder day IMO when the front delt gets blasted from benching and the rear delt gets worked on rows and DLs.

    try giant setting the shoulder movements. I do that once in a while so I can get out of the gym faster on Fri's.
    and I don't hate Monday's, I just hate the light headed feeling I usually get afterwards. OH lunges FTMFL

    a bodybuilder's routine is designed to primarily for building muscle, and while you may not plan on competing, by your own words, you want to build your body. so ya, it applies pretty well

    but as for your original question, you can go synergistic or antagonist

    Synergistic means muscles groups that are worked together, ie back/bi (bi's worked my many back exercises), chest/tri's (and to a lesser extent shoulders)

    Antagonist are muscles that are opposite the muscles worked together, ie. back/tri, chest/bi


    In the end, find an established routine, be it NQ's or some routine from another established lifter and run with it for a while.

    same here. part of me loves the brutality of all the days, especially leg day, then again, the rest of me loathes it :o

    but the frat boy in me loves the fact I'm working my arms and shoulders (my personal weakpoints) which makes me crave it more than other days.

    I hate working my legs, but I love doing it on Monday. Then I know I don't have to do it again all week. :rofl:
