First off I am a big WWII fan so I am think about one of these guns. They are cheap and from that era. I am not wanting one for protection in home unless I get an M44 w/bayonet and stab the intruder.:mamoru: I have called a few places around town and I have found them from $139-$159. I first found 3 M44. The first one was $139 and not laminated w/o bayonet. The second($159) was laminated and also had the bayonet. The third was $159 with no bayonet but was laminated. I called another place that had a Nagant that was the 91/30 for $149. I did not get to see it but he said it was a beautiful gun and did not appear to ever be issued. www.aimsurplus.com have them for $80 but I am still new to the gun world and do not know anyone with a FLV license and I'm sure a gun shop with it would mark it up quite a bit on me.

    What should I do?

um....anything more than 100 bucks for a base 91/30, M38, or M44 is to much IMHO. Check your local big5, they almost always have them on sale.

    oh, and 91/30 ftw.

    edit: 100 out the door.

where are you located? I know that almost everywhere in the US either has a big5 relatively close or an equivalent.

The hell hole of Arkansas. (It could be worse though... I could live in southern Arkansas instead of NW:noes: weird people down there) I would have to drive down to Texas for the closest store.

Only big chain we have around here is Dick's and they don't carry any C&R type stuff or any evil type rifles.

I will have more insight after this weekend, but I would suggest against an M44. Mine shoots to the left, and the sight is already adjusted to the left. I know that some have them shoot straight with the bayonet out (I didn't try this at the range, there was already a police officer eyeing me because it was louder than his AR), but on some that doesn't even help. I would say get an M38 if you can, or a 91/30.

Like I said, I'll try it out, and it might work perfectly with the bayonet extended. If that isn't the case, I need to see if I can make it shoot straight with the bayonet off of it. (The bayonet doesn't really concern me).

Check all the regular stuff, blueing and rust, the stock and shellac, muzzle wear and crown, rifling, any pitting in the bore, etc. Matching numbers is always nice, should be one on the mag floorplate, bolt, butt plate and receiver. I dont like the idea of getting a rifle thats been counterbored either, seems like an indicator of how bad the rifle may have been treated.

My buddy owns two Nagants, not sure what kind, but I can tell you they kick like a mule. I ran 10-20 rounds through one at the range and my right shoulder was purple. Probably one of the most fun guns ever though.

don't hold it 3 inches off your shoulder then :hsugh:

they really aren't that bad, the MOST I get is a slightly yellow bruise and some soreness, and that is after ~50 rounds

Nah, that was tucked tight, I was just wearing a wife beater like an idiot. Wood stock + bare skin = bruised. I did let loose one round without a tight tuck though. Butt jumped up and smacked me in the eye.

Awesome. I adjusted the sights on my M44 this weekend, and can hit a soda can at about 100 yards, so I am happy. Deer season, here I come!

I never have been hunting.... Just doesn't appeal to me. I always just like setting up a few targets and shoot away.

I have a 91/30, even though I've only put 2 rounds through it. My friends M44 is a blast to shoot.

I only hunt things I plan on eating. One deer a year usually suffices. I've been hog hunting once (which was eaten), but it was because the hogs were harassing the calves mainly. Varmints get hunted too, but obviously not to be eaten. Coyotes would fall under the varmint category, they harass the livestock.

On a side note, I plan on picking up an M38 if I can find one, I want something in better condition, without a bayonet.
