Well I have been debating between going with either a couple of :

http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/CF0502K2/ with a battery pack and ac inverter

    Or a couple of:

    http://www.mpex.com/page.htm?PG=Strobist%20Kits (PC kit 1)

I would also get cybersync transmitters for them.

I do a lot of outdoor shooting especially now with the ski/snowboarding season I'll be doing a lot of park shooting. Then I also do plenty of portraiture indoors.

which would be a better solution for the long run, yes I would spend more on the calumet for now but will it pay off in the end?

    Thanks for all the input.

From what I've read here, Mpex is unreliable a source.

If you need portability the vivitar set-up would prob. be less bulky though the strobe is prob. more powerful, right? Another thing to consider is that the umbrellas are gonna be blowing down a lot more than the softbox specially if you're gonna be in the snow/hills so if you went with the Vivitar you'd prob. be better off getting a softbox.

Do we really have to go down this road again. I'm local for their store and most of the "unreliability" your referring to happened when our city was dealing with a major storm which knocked out power for over 2 weeks to their store front. I know I was shopping in their store with a flashlight during that time (no not stealing stuff.)

I'm glad you've cleared things up, cause I had no idea what was going on.

Just passing on what I've read not too long ago.
