WAR seems like its dying after reading the layoff's of the dev staff and them going from 750k to 300k sub's in just 3 months :eek3:

LOTRO seems to be going the way of EVE and getting better and better.

I played the beta for LOTRO and didnt like it, but it may have gotten better. plus it is only 10/month I think

WAR is a great game and has a ton of potential, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a casual fun game.

Overall chose something that you think is interesting. I think both have demos.

If I were you, I'd go to LOTRO, because there are just way to many problems to get aggravated about in WAR.

Just give up now before you look even more stupid than you already do (if that's even possible).

if DAOC was a better game, it would have been competing with wow.
if EQ was a better game, it would have been competing with wow.

AoC never had a million active subs. They had a million "free" subs - you know, the month that came with the game for free? The actual number of subs that were active that were paid for beyond the free month was much, much, much less than a million.

Also, for the vast majority of MMOs these days, ESPECIALLY ones that say they will compete with WoW, their largest month is the first, because all the WoW haters jump onto the "new MMO" bandwagon. A month later they realize WoW is way way better and leave. This really doesn't count towards "competing" with WoW. A game has to have a large number of subscriptions for quite a few months before you can even say it will survive, much less be able to compete with the behemoth of the MMO genre.

it's simple really. if you like PVP, play WAR. if you like PVE, play LOTRO.
    both games are pretty one-dimensional

If you are used to WoW they are both going to suck. If you want a break from WoW play something other than an MMO for a while

you make a great point. I kinda thought that too because starting a new mmo is FTL (unless it's the upcoming star wars republic mmo)

I was used to WoW, left it and got into AoC for a while and then WAR when it came out later.

AoC started fucking tanking the day after it left beta basically, left up to Funcom's usual high standard of complete incompetence. Had a ton of potential but never even had a chance with Gaute and pals on the job.

WAR looked relatively promising, like it could potentially give WoW a run for it's money with EA/Mythic backing it.

WAR is ok, there's just not enough there. It gets old fast. There's no time wasting mechanisms/grinds like the ones WoW fucking LOVES.

No constant money grind making the game more of a job than entertainment, no constant level grinds and even when you dont try you fly through levels.

There is a constant sense of progress at least, with a few short stops whenever yo leave one teir and enter another, but it all ends quickly if you dont get bored enough to just stop anyway.

It's a fairly enjoyable game though, especially if you like big all out PVP battles. A few annoying kinks. Might be even more annoying and obvious to someone used to WoW's time-tested mechanics but hey.

But like some said, if you are sick of MMOs in general dont go to another one, its just going to suck too.

I've had more fun leveling in WAR than any other game. End game just isn't there imho.
