I need a sub $150 (can be used) flash. i already bought a cold shoe, so i'd like something that has an off camera port on the flash itself. its going to be my secondary light (fill, catch, etc) so it doesnt have to be monumentally powerful. any tried and true direction?

Used 430ex. I would get something that will allow you the use of ttl and high-speed sync.

does this matter for an off camera fill flash? not being sarcastic. I just thought that as long as you were using it off camera, you could trigger any flash from any camera

kinda, if you want to use high shutter speed you need TTL i think.

Exactly, having manual off camera control plus HSS and ETTL for when it's on the cord is always a good thing.

    Just want to clarify:

High speed sync, is using flash above than the camera's max sync speed(usually 1/200 or 1/250 on some). When you using flash above the sync speed, you'll get a portion of the picture black. Which is where the second curtain closes before the flash can light up the whole frame.

When using high speed sync(faster than 1/200 or 1/250), the flash will rapidly spray several bursts of flashes, which decreases flash power, but will light up your subject. This is good when you're shooting a subject against the sun.

TTL means "through the lens" which is a flash's method of metering for exposure.

I hope that makes sense :hs:

I don't know this off hand, but if recharge rate is really important to you, you can pick up an external battery pack to make it much faster.

full power 11 seconds or so (i think its guide is 120 on full power)
    1/2 power 1 second~
    depends on power source.

    the only reason I don't have a 285 is cuz it's slow.

    According to B&H:

Recycle Time10.4 sec. (based on fresh AA batteries and full power)
4.8 sec. when used with the SB-4 AC Adapter fuck that.

    My SB600 is listed at:

Recycle Time3.5 Seconds with fresh alkaline batteries & full power But with the eneloops it's about 1-1.5 seconds.

I couldn't imagine waiting ~10 seconds, and if i'm plugging something into the wall, it's sure as hell not going to be a speedlight.

thats a good point. I guess you rarely should.

But if i'm shooting in late afternoon and trying to balance ambient, there's a good chance I will...

but yeah, I guess if it's your first off camera flash and you wanna stay cheap, there aren't any better choices...

I would just make sure i'm rocking eneloops and have a couple spare sets with me...
