I realize this is probably a vague question with too many possible variables but I'm just looking for a general answer...

    Which will burn more calories?

3 mile run, 8 min mile pace

    or

3 mile walk, quick step pace, with a 40 pound weight vest

For the duration the workout alone or taking EPOC in the next 24 hours into consideration?

I would guess the 3 mile walk but really have no idea. :dunno:

Along these lines, for those who skip rope... would you consider 150-180 revolutions/ minute still low intensity?

I've been taught that EPOC is highly over rated, and its effects are negliable. :dunno:

I'm trying to supplement my evening workouts. I don't like to run for the reasons you mentioned. I thought walking with a weighted vest would help but in the long run, I guess it would do more harm than good.

I usually only use the weight vest on the elliptical machine at the gym so there's less impact stress on my already salty (Navy) knees and feet. Being that no impact is involved, I may just stick with that.

    I appreciate the responses.

    neither are particularly joint friendly.

one is high intensity shock loading on the joints while the other is lower intensity shock loading with increased weight.

to the OP, how about finding a nice steep ill (or treadmill at max incline) and walk up that at a brisk pace. I do that at the end of my workouts and its just killer I find.

the walk for sure.. calories are burned relative to weight over distance so the walk and added weight should burn more.

I've never understood how intesity couldn't play a factor in it, but most things i read on the topic seem to say they will burn about the same. CC background here as well.

The last part is why I use the weight vest. Basically I'm tricking my body into working harder.

A personal trainer that uses a lighter vest stated that using it will increase your cardio and aerobic efficiency because blah blah blah... he went into specific regarding my heart and lungs and used terms I've only read in medical books.

But I got the general idea of what he was saying.

run a couple 100% intensity 400m sprints, and EPOC will be high
