Get the X2. It's actually designed for "normal person" use, whereas the Opteron is designed to be installed in a server. Doesn't mean it can't pull duty as a regular desktop machine, but the X2 will have better tech support that "normal people" will be able to make use of. It probably also uses less power than the Opteron.

Furthermore, the dual-core setup in the X2 will keep your computer from bogging down when you have lots of crap running at once.

    in for this.

    I'm between an opty and 4400+ X2.

That opteron is dual core also...btw.

reasoning for X2 over opteron? From what I've read, the opty is better for OCing than the X2

basically price. i heard that the 3800+ could over clock to over the 4800+ speeds with the only downside being the smaller cache. that and i couldn't afford the 4400

Price not being an issue, I would go with the Opteron... otherwise the x2 will have a better bang/buck ratio.

any advice on ram.....i don't think the lower latency is worth the price....
i've also heard that when you put over 1g of ram into a XP system it gets lower benchmarks....anyone know if there is any truth to that

i'm thinking 4400 or 4200...I'm not quite convinced I'd go the OCing route at all.

go for the 4400+ cuz the 4200+ has the same amount of cache as the 3800+
