Once I get my tax returns back I want to get an AK but don't know which one to get. I don't want a folder, but would rather have the traditional wood furniture. I've seen all the arguments for the mag well dimples and chrome lined barrels, but are there any AK's out there with both of those options? I'm probably going to buy locally, so I just want an idea as to what I should be looking for.

Do you want a high quality AK thats really built like a quality firearm or do you want a cheap slapped together fun at the range ak?

I'd rather get one thats pretty good quality, certainly doesn't have to be the best though.

You might look at arsenal and see if they're out of your price range. They're well made and sort of price peers with ar15s.

As for price, I was hoping to stay around $400. I also need to buy a bunch of those cheap mags from sportsmans guide if they still have them, and then a couple thousand rounds.

For $400 I'd hit the EE on arfcom and look for non slant cut MAK90.

MAK90 is chicom right? The only ones I've seen are thumbhole stocks, not a fan of that.

easily changeable. you aint gonna find much for 400 especially now days. you are treading in wasr territory if you buy from a dealer.

    .

Another option is to get a Saiga and convert it yourself. You can tailor it to your tastes.

There's one on ARFCOM now for $400 shipped I think. Butthole stock but you can swap it out.

For $50 you can make it 922 compliant and pick up tradition stock and p grip, its really all your going to find in you price range that has a good fit and finish unless you go the SAIGA conversion route. Sometimes you can find already converted mak's for $430ish.

What is OT's opinion on this?

    http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/NEW_AK_WASR_RIFLE_w__Bayonet_Lug___Muzzle_Break.html

AIM has been out of stock for a long time, so i've not been considering one through them, but it looks like they have some again. They are close enough that I can drive there, but I just want to make sure that gun is worth it. Aren't WASR's the guns that have the trigger slap problem? I wouldn't have a problem picking up a new trigger group from TAPCO.

yeah there notorious for trigger slap, you'll want to strip and refinish the wood too, other possible problems would be crooked front sight and rough magwell that may need trimming.
