when you do a bench press, do you bring the bar all the way down to the chest?

Some of my friends only bring the bar half way or 3/4 down and told me that the trainers said it's bad to bring the bar all the way down.
My friend who has been training for a long time (he currently weights 210 lbs, does 445lbs squats, 700lbs deadlifts, benches 420 lbs) says the following
"those trainers don't know wtf they are talking about... it's a lot harder touching the chest, bottom 1/2 of the rep works the chest more so than the upper, the deeper u go the more chest involvement u get, that's why people use DBs because u can lower DBs even further"
What are your opinions (in terms of building a bigger chest... should the bar go all the way down) ?

dave tate touches his chest when he benches... look what happened to him! :eek4:

    1. Dave has to walk down steps one at a time so both feet are on the same step.
    2. His gait is horrible – it looks like he just got off a horse he rode naked across the US.
    3. He can't get off the floor. Seriously – he may be able to bench a ton of weight, but his own bodyweight is too much for him to stabilize and do a push up to get off the floor.
    4. He wakes up in the morning – only because of pain. It takes him 20 minutes to get out of bed and then he spends another 20 minutes in the hot tub before he can move.
    5. He can’t play with his kids – in fact he can’t bend over to pick them up. (Can you imagine how that feels?)
    6. He can’t turn his head to the side without twisting his entire torso.

Unless you have shouder issues definitely go all the way down. I'm sure those trainers are the same to say full squats is bad for everyone.

Touch the chest as long as it's not causing you any pain or discomfort.

I touch my chest on flat bench and declines. However, due to a shoulder injury I hardly to flat bench and when doing incline I only go down to the point where my elbows are parallel to the floor.
