Is there any way to easily recover that file without the use of recovery software? Does it show up in the recycle bin somewhere?

    Yes.
    It's called Shadow Copies
But it's only available on Windows 2003 Servers. If it's enabled, you can right click the parent folder and click on Previous Versions.

The wierd thing is - you can't do it from the server itself. A server can restore another's shadow copies, or any client, but not its own files. I kind of find this a lil bizarre.
