When working deltoids, what other muscle groups do you target?

What exercises do you find compliment deltoid work?

For obvious reasons, I work chest and shoulders on different days, but I find that on my shoulder days, I leave the gym not feeling entirely exhausted, which leaves me with the sensation that I did not somehow work hard enough.

I was wondering what other muscle groups OT'ers work on days which they focus upon the delts. - I work all 3 heads on the same shoulder day - the gym equipment is limited and lacking a barbell and cable - the only machine there is is a shoulder press which is breaking anyways (it's a community gym - as in free) and so most of my shoulder exercises utilise dumbbell raises and presses to target the posterior, lateral and anterior delts - but the range of exercises available to me are limited.

    Thanks for the input OT.

    That's a good one.

jmezz: hell fucking yeah. Delts are probably my favourite muscle group.

You work your tri's and abs on some delt exercises as well.

With a cable seems the most likely ones, but there's no cable in my sparsely equipped gym.

have you tried standing overhear work for your delts. Jerks, push press, push jerks, standing presses or overhead squats. That shit will get you some functional strength and put some serious size on your delts.

    If not traps/back

Werd. Do some more standing overhead work.

And I know I've been pushing the olympic lifts a lot lately but seriously, give them a shot. I've never felt a pump like that before I started doing them and they are the only things that have really gotten my traps to do anything.

I usually superset a couple exercises which leaves me barely able to lift my arms afterward.

Since we are on the shoulder subject...do any of you guys do upright rows? I was thinking of adding those into mine but it seems like they do more damage than good.

And another vote for standing presses. I don't know if it's good but you can do a little more weight than seated by "jumping" it up and then slowly lowering it down.

I normally do standing overhead raises, but may try a more complex variety of pushes and jerks like you mention.

I usually leave with my shoulders blasted, aching and nearly immobile. What I am looking for is other exercises I can do (besides legs since I have a dedicated day for them) other than core work such as abs/back which won't require much shoulder strength.

In fact, lat pulldowns I find are a bit too tough after a heavy duty delt session - especially wide grip.

Jmezz did mention that some delt exercises work the tris - perhap's I'll try combine some triceps work into my delt work.

Crackity: I can't do chest on shoulder day. My shoulders give out before I actually test my chest. Traps are a good one though - I'll move them to shoulder day I think.

Problem is there is always overlap.

Most chest exercises use your triceps and shoulders (particularly front delts)

And most shoulder exercises (overhead stuff) uses your triceps too

Although traps are part of the back, I've started working them on shoulder day because they are semi-worked out anyway during things like side lateral raises.

You could always do accessory things like calves, forearms etc too. If you have a stubborn body part, try hitting it a 2nd time.

For upright rows, take a wide grip. It'll put all the pressure on the delts, and not your joints.

    Why did you hate it?

And what did you see a big difference in, your delts or your tri's?

So do your chest work in the beginning of the week and work your shoulders before triceps on shoulder / tri day. :dunno:
