I'm going to basic on Aug 5th which will probably take about 9 weeks including indoc, then I go to Pensacola for 5 months for my Avionics school. I want to live in my own room ASAP, as I have never lived on my own before. I don't mind if it is on base, as long as I have my own bedroom.

So, two questions. When will I be able to get my own BEDroom, which means I may still have a roommate sharing a living room and bathroom, and

When will I be able to completely live alone?
    Thanks.

Honestly you have a lot more to be concerned about than what your housing situation will be. You will live where the Navy tells you to live and don't have much choice in the matter. Housing varies greatly depending on where you are stationed and how many people there are that need to live there. The only surefire way to live on your own immediately is to get married.

Depends on where you are stationed and how fast you make rank. Once you get to your squadron / Aimd you will be in the barracks for a while, at least until you can get your off base housing chit approved. Most of my stateside buddies where out in town before they ever made E-4. The barracks is not going to give you your own room until you make E-5 (in most cases).
If you go overseas you might as well forget about it during your first hitch unless you get married. Just get yourself a decent roomie and party away!

Oh and good luck getting a living room

You did not join the Air Force dude.

My best friend is a year and a half in and still has not lived on his own. He went through a-school at Pensacola as well. From what he said, you go to boot, and then off to a-school, where he had what was pretty much a college dorm, 2 to a room. Right after that, he was assigned to a ship, where he definately doesn't get his own room. With an avionics rate, you'll likely be put right onto a ship, where you will live usually, even if in port, unless you rent an appartment off base. With your ship date and field, it is possible you may be assigned to the newest carrier, the Bush.

Avionics can go to shipboard AiMD, but if you request "O" level training in school you automatically go to a squadron. It is a much better experience from what I have seen.

I had a 4 bedroom house with three room mates 7 days after I arrived at my first duty station. Dorms where over crowded. USAF FTW :coolugh:

what everyone has said is pretty much correct here. you have a higher chance of going to a squadron in an aviation rating (AE, AT?) then a ship honestly, and speaking from experience you should go for that. when we go to the ship those guys have been underway a few days to a few weeks before we get there and they're still underway when they drop us off in san diego. this is west coast navy mind you. you'll live in the barracks for a while unless you're married, so until you get a BAH chit approved you're stuck there, you go to the top of the list list for BAH if you're an E-4 so study your ass off in A school and they might give you E-4 for that.

I wouldn't recommend getting a dog unless you have an SO, between going to the ship and doing land dets you won't be home enough to properly care for the thing and it'll be a burden on someone else.

Don't rush it because you will absolutely HATE your first roommate simply because one of you will be the clean one and one of you will be the durdy bastard.

You'll be going to NATTC Pensacola where they train pretty much everyone in aviation...AB, AC, AD, AE, AM, AO, AW, AS, AT, PR, etc. I left there last May after graduating AS school, and spent a total of seven months there when my recruiter told me it would be ten weeks. AT's are usually there longer, around 8-9 months. The reason for that is because there is a lot of prepatory training you have to complete before starting your A-School. It takes time to go through it, and it takes time to class up for it.

They have four Navy barracks that house different rates. As an AT, you'll be in Bravo or Charlie most likely. They're all the same anyway. You have a chance of being alone in your room, but it's not likely...and if it does happen it won't be that way for long. Average is two to a room and most is three. You'll have a fridge, microwave, carpet, desk, sink, and a rack that will feel like the best thing you've ever slept on after boot camp. The head is shared by two rooms.

As far as living on your own, you can do that in Pensacola if you are married. I forget what it's called, but you only have to stay in the barracks on your duty day. If you're not married, there is no chance. After you leave A-School and get to the fleet, you can buy an apartment/house anytime you want...but it's hard to do (impossible) on an Airman's pay. You'd be living paycheck to paycheck and barely getting by. Again, if you're married though, you will get BAH (basic allowance/housing) that is an extra $1,500 or so a month. You can route a chit to get BAH if you're not married, but it will be denied. The only way to get BAH without being married is to be an E4 with four years of service, or an E5.

Now, some schools in Pensacola grant students E4 upon graduation if they extend their service by a year, finish #1 in their class, and submit an essay on why they deserve to be advanced (complete bullshit, you're still a booter and will get no respect once in the fleet) that is reviewed by the schoolhouse LCPO.

Good luck. If you have any more questions, shoot me a PM or in this thread.

They must have changed things quite a bit since I went through there. I was out in town in civies over the weekend within two weeks of getting there. There is nothing out there anyway.

Make sure you get everything tagged and logged when you show up in Pensacola. Things have a habit of growing legs there. Also, you have to remember that you are not in Miami or even Panama City. Pcola is full of white trash and nasty trailerpark types.

You will probably get dragged out to the strip clubs at some point. The only one worth bothering with is Lookers. Whatever you do, don't ever go to Arties Angels. Talk about a bunch of toothless crackwhores :ugh:

In Pensacola the Marines are more restricted because they have had a lot of incidents within the past gew years. Rape and murder charges to be specific. When I left there last May they were talking about securing all liberty for the Marines.

In Pensacola, it really sucks to be a Marine.

Must have changed a lot since I was there. They used to have the best girls around. Of course that was in comparison to the other strip clubs in Pcola, so don't expect too much
