just wondering what are some signs that you should take a week or few days off?

i am a 34 y/o noob who's been lifting for about 3.5 months now.. full body 3x week consisting of mainly compound moves (squat, dl, bench, mil press, rows)

i feel like i've hit a wall with military press and bench right now.

    switch to DB's.

I normally only take time off for reasons that seem out of my control. IE I go on vacation. Or I get sick. There always seems to be that "week" that creeps up everything 2 or 3 months that screams you need to focus on studying instead of lifting or something.

when I feel like shit and start to feel a bit burnt out i take a week off. nothing wrong with it. you have to take breaks and listen to your body. can't go balls out all the time

When I get to a plateau on something I usually drop the weight about 20-30% and up my reps by 5-10 per set. I've only done this once but it helped me get over my last plateau pretty good.

thanks for your input guys.. some things to look at/try.

diet seems like the popular choice and makes sense come to think of it. i haven't lost weight recently but i've not gained either after gaining 10-15lbs at first. maybe that metabolism has sped up or i'm really eating less.

Indeed, I really got no explanation other than it was the first time I hit a plateau back in college, then I quit college and started working out a lot less, then I joined the Navy and then recently in the past 6 months or so I got back into it hardcore. So really, I haven't plateaued in about 4 years. However, the drop 20-30% weight is usually what I do when I do sets to failure and can't quite get them all. Like say I'm going for 12, if I only get 8 or 9, drop 20-30% and finish.
