I'm considering upgrading my body from this D50 to a D300. I've got the money but I don't know if I want to buy it right now or not. I want something that is going to last me for a LONG time so I'd like to get something right after it comes out. What is Nikon's general pattern for releasing new bodies? Should I hold off for the next upgrade of the D300 (I can't afford a D3 nor do I need one)? Or is now the best time?

    Discuss.

Now is the time for a D300. It's still new, and it will be current for a LONG time as far as digital goes.

Next d300 (d400) will not be for a long time. The d300 is 6 months old. Expect to wait at least 12-14 months for the next update.

All of them get replaced. Normally within ~18 months. Dont wait or else youll never get something. The D50 would still last you in all honesty and the D300 is about 1983289098734562x the camera that the D50 is. Just buy it. Just because a D400 or even a D500 comes out doesnt mean the D300 now takes shitty pictures.

I know its a great camera, I'm just thinking waiting for one more upgrade will be a really big difference, and its not like I HAVE to have it right now, I just kinda have the bug to buy it. If I can make myself wait a month or two then I'll be good till a new one comes out....

Theres just a few small things about the D50 that really bug me

The D300 WAS their fucking MASSIVE REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE.

    The D300 > D400 won't be near the upgrade the 200 > 300 was.

    QFT.

The change that occurred with the D300 and D3 was a serious paradigm shift with Nikon. The 400 may have some decent stuff, but it wont be nearly as huge as what the 300 was.

    good to know, thanks!

Not enough MP to print decent size pics, only holds a 2gb SD card, shitty FPS rate, anything above ISO 400 sucks ass, etc etc

Its called upsizing. Weve got a huge poster at work that was printed from a D50. Its like 30x20. It looks great so long as you arent straight up on it.

a full size raw image prints at 12.5" by 8.3" - IMO that sucks. I'd like to be able to print twice that size. I like big prints :eek3:

I guess so, I've printed out a few things that size and haven't been all that happy with them.

Again, just one of the many small things that makes me want to upgrade. But I do love the D50. Its amazing :)

The D50 was WAY cooler than its competition back in the day.

I've printed hundreds of 16x20s and 20x30s from mine that are AWESOME. I finally bought a D300 on Thurs

The reason you made this thread is the reason I made my D300. I wanted to upgrade and keep it for a while... so far, no regrets. :big grin:
