I think you could start already.
I'm trying to improve my single arm chins but because of the tendonitis, anything more than 2 reps and I'm in pain. On the other hand, adding weight doing singles doesn't bother me too much so that's what I'm doing.

my friend can do 1 armed chins, he told me the best way to progress to them is to hold on to your wrist first and slowly move down your arm until you dont need it any more. also doing negatives would help as well right?

also id rather do 3 sets of 12 reps instead so how would you suggest i go about making gains in that regard. i have been making gains in pullups on a weekly basis so what i am doing is working, im just curious if there is a better way to go about it

I agree with your friend. I was explaining the same thing to someone else.

As for the pullups.. you're doing them mostly for hypertrophy, right?
You don't necessarily need to add weights. Play around with your rest time and hence your reps. For awhile I was doing 20 sets of only 5 with 1 min rest...and even gradually lowered the rest to 30 secs.
