Do soldiers use earplugs or headphones like they would on the shooting range, if not wouldn't they turn deaf real fast?

I'd hate it. I shot a 32 revolver without hearing protection twice and had to stop because the second time made my ears ring. I've always had sensitive hearing though.

I don't understand how all the soldiers aren't completely deaf.

I have a friend thats been in the army. He said he used 9mm bullet casings as earplugs if there was extended gun firing.

A big part of the problem with worrying about going deaf is getting shot by the guy you didn't hear around the corner who isn't worried about going deaf.

Ear protection has started to become more common, but its still mostly near the top of the "trickle down" pipe.

Recently, I've associated the standard-issue earplug container with soldiers whenever they're toting a rifle - typically around the collar of their BDUs. Dunno if that's just a range thing, or if they actually wear them in combat.

If I was in combat I'd probably go deaf. :o But, I'd rather be deaf than be dead. :( If I was a sniper I'd probably wear ear plugs. If I was support I would too. But, outdoors, an M16 isn't really that loud so I would just deal with it if I were in a combat zone.

Also, hearing is one of our major senses. In a lot of cases hearing is almost as important as touch and sight. Imagine if you couldn't hear someone sneaking up behind you... or rear gunfire. That would suck...

I actually asked my brother this one night after he got home from Iraq. He looked at me like I was stupid. And I havent even noticed if he had any hearing loss. I imagine he would, practically daily firefights carrying a SAW
