I installed WinXP SP1 awhile ago and my computer has never automatically turned off. Kept putting off fixing it, but does anyone know what could possibly be wrong? It used to work fine with Win98 and Win ME.

    Thanks!

I thought this problem was fixed after the 9x's. :eek3:

More than likely a driver hanging or something. Windows is waiting for something to finish, but that thing is stuck, hence the hang.

Get a hold of your MB drivers and install them

How doesn't it shut down? Is it hanging or is it giving the "it is now safe to shut down" message or whatever?

If it hangs, it is probably drivers. If it gives you that message, I don't know. One of the PCs here at work does it but I never fixed it. :dunno:

Do a search on Google about it.
Its a documented problem with XP and older ATX powered machines.

Thanks guys. It was giving me the it's safe to shutdown the computer, but it just wasn't shutting down the computer for me. It was a clean install of XP. But I looked at the website Buck-o linked to and I tried it and it worked. I just had to enable that legacy APM device. Thanks!
