Yes, I play wow (lets not get into how im a loser for it or anything) and I pretty much build a computer to run that game FLAWLESSLY. So, I talked to a buddy of mine, got a expensive motherboard, expensive, fast ram. I also got a 8800 gts and a one of the fastest processors I could find..

Basically, I spent a good chunk of change on it

When I loaded into wow, and any other game.. it was impeccable, I could run on max settings, be around a million people and have no problems. Now, my buddy told me processor and ram had a lot to do with how good wow ran so I bought the best I could.

Well for some reason it seems to be getting worse and worse and worse..

i took my case and cleaned all the fans.. cleaned out everything..

Why is it doing this? I dont understand, everything is getting slower and slower

You can shut off all the "Speed Launch" and "Auto-Update" crap by running msconfig.exe and digging through the contents of its "Startup" tab.

Norton Utilities has a program called Speed Disk that will do a better job of defragging your hard drive than the Windows Defragmenter will ever do. Get this and use it. DO NOT BUY NORTON INTERNET SECURITY.

AVG is a good free anti-virus program. Set it to scan all files when they're modified -- you don't need it to scan all files when they're opened, because a virus will have to modify files to cause trouble, and it will get caught at that point. No sense wasting CPU power scanning files over and over again even though they've never been touched.

Ad-Aware is a good spyware scanner. Spybot is good too, but don't install the TeaTimer feature, because it will waste CPU power scanning for spyware continuously.

Of all these, the Norton Speed Disk program is the most important for you, because WoW puts some gi-fucking-normous files on your hard drive, and then it modifies them on a regular basis when you install updates, and that makes those huge files get fragmented really fast.

if all above fails to improve speed, backup what you need and reinstall windows

that always gives me a huge speed boost

If you decide to reformat, you should do some planning in advance.

I would do the following. If you don't have an extra backup drive now, get one.

I would say with the advent of the newest hard drives out there, that the Raptor is no longer worth the money.

The Seagates are the ones to get, imo. And the new 11 series is freaky fast.

I would get the 250gb 11 series Seagate.

Then I would get Acronis True Image home, and as soon as you have all your programs installed the way you like, all the updates, etc. I would drop an image of your drive onto your backup drive.
Once you have that image, you can reset your drive in 10 minutes or so.
(I just do the basic os, and a full recovery on mine is 4 minutes)

But before all of that, I would make darned sure that I was running AVG antivirus, Zonealarm firewall with Windows firewall turned off, Spybot S&D, and SpywareBlaster for bad link blocking.

I just checked, and nobody has the 250gb ones in stock, but the 500gb version
    is only $120 shipped.

He's running World of Warcraft. The data files are fucking huge, over a gigabyte apiece. He needs to defragment his computer and he needs a good program to do it. I recommended one. I've never heard of O&O Defrag, but it looks pretty good. As long as it organizes files according to how often they get used, then I'd say to give it a try.

Formatting is the easy way out, and unless he learns how to maintain his machine, he'll just have to keep reformatting every few months.

I downloaded speed disk but the file was corrupt, so I download O&O and it looks like a sweet program, i'll check in tomorrow after running everything and tell you how it runs.

Which is where Acronis comes in.

Coincidentally, i'm just getting ready to call a friend up to walk him through backing up an old drive to a backup with Acronis.
Then installing a new drive, and doing a recovery onto it so that he can have all of his stuff on the new drive.

    :noes:

    Wish me luck!

I tried Acronis on one of my work machines. The fucking demo wouldn't let me actually use the product, just let me see what the features would be if I'd paid for it. What kind of a demo is that? At least let me use it once.

If you would like, I have a legit license key for version 7.0.638 that I'm not using.
I'll pm it to you, if you would like to try it out.
If it works at all, it will work as well as the new version.

Did you run the defrag manually or did you just let it do the automatic defrag thing?

Also, you can generally expect to write off 10% of initial performance once you have everything set up the way you like it. All those services and drivers and whatnot require overhead -- you'll never get away from that.
