is bouncing the bar off of the chest when pushing it up that bad? my coworker was saying that that's not the correct form and how wide grip is the way to go...ibflamesandn00b

Bouncing the bar off your chest makes you a tool.

    Don't be that guy.

bouncing the bar is a bad practice.

there is no "best" grip. there are different grips for focusing on different muscles.

As far as grips go, what is considered "medium" grip changes for each person. A true "medium" grip will have your forearm/upper arm (at the elbow) should be at a 90 degree angle when the bar is at your chest.
For example, my "medium" grip is with my middle finger directly on the line using a standard olympic barbell

I change my grip up depending on the workout. I do a wide grip to target more chest when I am doing higher rep workouts. When I am doing higher weight and lower reps I have a narrower grip and try to keep my elbows in, which is basically the form power lifters use I belive. You should not bounce the bar off your chest.

you could break your sternun, not to mention the fact you are cheating yourself on the initial pump.... Do lighter weight and control the bar all the way down, and all the way up...

on a body builder stance, bouncing bar off chest is a bad idea.

but what if your a powerlifter and just want to get the weight up? the powerlifting clips ive seen where they bench is usually controlled smoothly and touch and go

Then it won't count in comp, plus you're still cheating yourself out of getting stronger.

Uh...you have to pause at the bottom during competition then you get a press command from a judge. There's no bouncing there either.

someone should mention that the wider your grip is, the harsher it is on your shoulders.
