Interested in hearing the workflow you guys use from taking the pic off a memory card to the end of it being cataloged in whatever program do you use.

Do you catalog every pic you take that you keep or just certain sets? I have a ton of pics form 2001 to now and I've only cataloged the past year or so. I can't decide if I want to catalog all the pics I've taken or not.

I'm so disorganized it's horrible.. I really need to make a dedicated folder on my external hard drive and just organize stuff by date...

I'm under the impression that my cataloging sucks. You'll likely get better suggestions from the others.

My folder structure is like so..

    D:\Photos\YYYY\YYYY-MM-DD\*.NEF

That's pretty much it. If I photochop up a PSD or whatever it'll reside in the same directory as the original NEF.

I put it in whatever corresponding folder pertains to what I shot. If it is new, I create a new folder.

I edit in Lighroom or Photoshop as needed but don't let either of them catalog my photos. I'm not a fan of that process...i like my folder process.

create folder on my desktop for the 'event'
copy pics from card to that folder
    import into lightroom
edit photos in lightroom while they're on my C:. much faster this way.
when done, close LR and copy to NAS box
    I:\YYYY\MM\MMDDYYYY Event Name\
Open LR, tell it where the 'missing' pics are.

every year, i create a new LR catalog.

    all lightroom

personal stuff.... just sort by date

paid stuff is put into a collection with the clients name

everything is then rated, 1 star gets "standard" corrections, then once those are all done, 2 stars gets more attention. and those go out for proofs, picked images get 3 stars and have final editing done.

Do you guys catalog everything you've taken in your app of choice? I just started using LR last year and I've only organized new stuff since then. I can't decide I want to catalog all my old pics too. I probably should. :dunno:

i've been cataloging my stuff in the same folder structure forever, so i just opened LR, pointed it at the 2002 folder, and saved it as the 2002 Catalog. Did the same for all of the other years.

    not really necessary, but whatever.

I catalogue by client name or company name. Within the company directory I then categorize by project name or models name. I then use Lightroom to list the entire directory structure. I import all the photos, including 1:1 previews because I hate waiting for images to load.

I use the flagging feature to flag my favorite photos of that specific shoot.

I catalogue all my photos into lightroom. I'm about to pass the 250k mark.

Catalogue all personal photos too? Do you have seperate libraries or all in one?

I really want to catalogue the last 7 years of photos I have, but I'm so OCD with keywords and metadata, I think I'd go insane. :hsugh:

Speaking of metadata, in LR, can I search for pics created by a specific camera?

    C:/Photos/Library/2009/08/17, etc, etc.

I have no need for keywords or anything of that sort.

I have so many pics, it'd be nice to be able to search for keywords. :dunno:

I don't use the date system at all. I can't fucking remember what day it is, let alone when I shot a certain event.

I import into one specific drive, then after the data dump, I catalog files by type of shoot > specific job (work pics), or category > significance (personal pics/projects)

an example would be work/weddings/jon+colleen/ or personal/project/noir

    something like that...

then since I'm already moving them around, it's easy to keyword them as i'm dumping them into the folder.

I do have personal photos catalogued, but it's more of a general catalogue. My personal photos also only makeup a small subset of the majority of my workflow. I catagories personal photos either by person (ie friends names or former girlfriends), location or if involing family. I also catagorize if it's a personal event (birthday, wedding etc).

I don't go crazy with keywords or metadata. Most of the organizational work I do is on the directory structure. All I'm doing in lightroom is just importing the full file listing of folders and then rendering the 1:1 previews.
