So I imagine all this nice army type shit is out here for us to buy, but once it's obtained and pics are posted, people call it "tacticool". Is that a knock to the gun or are you saying it's tactical and cool?

    School me :hsd:

Shit that you'd never really use in any realistic setting is generally described as tacticool. It's a knock to the owner of the gun usually. It's sort of like "rice" in the automotive world. Stuff like quad rails with rail covers or crazy stupid heavy shit that in all likelihood will never be used is tacticool.

I've thought of it as stuff that is more about appearance and/or gadgetry than it is about function... Kinda like those big spoilers you see on front wheel drive "ricers"...

I've seen it used as a slight towards the gun owner, but I've also seen gun owners bragging about how "tacticool" their gun is...

Personally I'm in the "whatever floats your boat" camp... When it comes to gun enthusiasts, NEED rarely factors into the equation... I suppose this is true for most enthusiasts when it comes to their hobby...

Heeeey, I have rail covers. They are far easier on the hands than the rail itself.
Crap...I have a tacticool gun :wtc:

I'd rather spend my hard earned money on ammo or range time

Tacticool is a polite way of saying gay.

While most of the stuff has a use it becomes tacticool when somebody who hardly shoots builds some sort of safe queen and bolts a whole bunch of stuff to it. Mostly so they can post pics on the internet.

Who here actually uses ANY of this stuff for what it's intended for. I loved when I was getting my EOtech the guy tried talking me into one that was "Night vision" capable. When the hell am I gonna use NV. Hell, I've never even shot it at night. I think it's a way to say "i'm jealous". SImply cause I have the $$ to buy all the cool shit that you can't (not you personally).

Personally I think full lenght railed handguards are cosmetic first, and handguards second. They are heavy, really not that well thought out for attaching accessories as the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock rail are not ideal. Generally weaponlight and short range side mounted sights work better at 1:30 and 10:30. Since they are cosmetic first and handguards second people put rail covers on them to make them better handguards. Doesn't make much sense to me. Get a modular handguard like the jp/vtac or the pri and then put little pieces of rail where you need them.

Other stuff i personally feel are gay are back up iron sights. Mostly because they are never used. If you want secondary sights go with a 45 degree side mounted short range sight.

Hopefully I don't fall into the "tacticool" crowd. I have a quad rail fore-end for a flashlight (sometimes) and a vertical pistol grip. I have tritium open sights and a Magpul MIAD That I keep a few extra rounds in.
