when i turn it on at the start up screen it detects my primary slave (which is my hd, right?) but it says it does not detect my secondary slave than it goes into some weird dos screen and eventually i get a boot failure and asks me to insert a boot disk into the a: drive. when i do that it fails and just goes back to the same screen.

Sounds like your boot sector is corrupt.
