GUN What's wrong with .30 caliber?

Discussion in 'On Topic' started by Market Garden, Sep 23, 2009.

  1. http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/index_files/30cal_fullVersion.pdf

The link has some charts that aren't in what I pasted below. I thought this article was really interesting, and is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in cartridge selection for LR shooting. It's also good to know if you simply want to argue with people about .30cal ballistics, and why the new-fangled cartridges really are better for certain uses. I also expect phrozen to come in here and proclaim his love for 7mm bullets.

    Lets make this more fun.

Someone make the argument, given the alternatives, why a man with a single stage press and a clue would choose a 308, obviously excluding shooting paradigms which dictate so.

  5. Lack of knowledge? Not that there's anything inherently wrong with the cartridge, just that there are options that are better in every important respect depending on your application.

Or maybe that the 270Win is the greatest caliber ever designed by man.

    That would be fun too.

"Brush calibers" and the turdy-turdy would be a good aside.

I'll go ahead and give you a start:

The military uses the 308, so it's the best because the mililtary always uses the best.

Oh, and the 270/30-30 are flat shooting and have killed lots of deer. You can also by ammo at Wal-Mart for them.

    Go go go

  9. I don't think we're going to get much trolling action in here. Make a thread in the main forum, but do it in an hour when I get back from lunch so I can get in at the beginning. I'd make it, but I can't change my AV and last time I tried trolling in there some people recognized the logo and it didn't work so well.

Fuckit, lets make this a free for all.

The Mosin Nagant and 7.62x54R are the best hunting rifles EVAR.

  11. If you lose it in the field you can just pull another one out of your truck. Shit, For the cost of 200 pieces of Lapua brass for my .223AI I could have bought 1.2 mosins.

    Hmm, you are probably right.

Someone PM AlkyHauler. I wanna hear what a guy who makes minimum wage loading rounds has to say on the matter.

  14. Fuck you if you don't believe him.

  15. I'm going to lunch. Come up with a good trolling thread and ready it for tactical deployment. I'll be back in ~1 hour.

Wish I could. I'm studying for a test, then I gotta write a paper. Likely little/no trolling for me tonight.

Tomorrow IS a new day though.....

    .510 whisper FTW!

At 1000 yds, it has a loss of only 132fps, and over twice the energy of a 180gr 308 bullet.

ETA: and you don't need hearing protection!

Friend of a friend has one. Costly build but he said it was worth it.

Threads like this do nothing for helping me talk myself out of a bolt gun build.

All the cool kids are doing it.

Now we just need THT to quit with all the AR faggotry and start lining up McM stocks, donor actions, and barrels.
