Now, just for the record I don't use digital but film and I don't develop my own film because its color and I am cheap. Snapfish FTW... Anyways I come across this every now and then where I have been flat out told that people who use digital and photoshop make there photos not art. Why is that? Is it because they have seen so many crappy pictures photoshop until they look great or whatever.

Brings up the question of what is art now doesn't it? If I put a blindfold on and slap some paint on a canvas - thats art? Tell those fuckers to shut the fuck up.

Depends on what my pictures are of. Some I do, others I don't.

Ya know, thats a good point, I guess.

These are three pictures I took. Straight from the camera.

    I will call them Art.

I was just bustin balls with my comments above, and I actually do consider the three pieces posted above to be art, and I do like them very much.

With that said, I absolutely believe that the all of us on this forum are Artists.

It's not the equipment that defines the artist, its the follow-through of the vision, from and idea or concept in ones head, to the final product expressed on the medium of the artists choice that makes something art.

All of us here use our vision, our creativity and our knowledge of the tools at our disposal to create a final, perfect expression of what we had in our heads.

The workflow I go through on my computer is NO different than the workflow I go through in the darkroom.

You capture an image on your camera - Point A.

You then develop, manipulate and print that image, the whole time making a series of choices.

Do I want this to be higher contrast? More tonal range? lens flair? color? b&w? any alternative effects?

Do I want to print this large? Small? On matte paper? Glossy?

How do I want to display this? What frame? What mat? Is this a stand alone image, or part of a series?

You then end up with your final product. One that you, the ARTIST, signs off on. Point B.

It's the journey from Point A to Point B that makes you an artist. I shoot film, digital, large format, 35mm and everything in between. My vision just doesn't stop because I pick up a digital camera instead of a 35mm.

Next time somebody says that just say photography isn't art period, get some real skill and paint something (regardless of if you're a photographer and agree with the statement or not). It really enrages "art" photographers.
