I've roadmarched in the shit, slept in the shit, drank in the shit, the shit sucks
I've worn the gasmask for > 12 hours many times. Lucky for me it was never in desert-type hot weather.
Yes, it's a "pro mask" short for protective mask. The pro mask used by the military will not filter most common gases like chlorine and ammonia based gases, so it is not a gas mask. It will also not filter out smallpox. This is due to the design of the C2A1 filter used. The M-40/M-42 and other variations are protective mask.
I was the Battalion NBC NCOIC at my last Army unit. Was also rated as the Battalion NBC Officer for a few months due to the Battalion not having a qualified NBC Officer to hold the slot. It was a nice bullett to have on my NCOER.
I can tell you some more useful knowledge about your handy dandy pro mask that will make you feel even more uncomfortable.
Pics? Links? Juicy stories?
basic training. hr or two. not issued to us outside of basic.
About 4 hours here also. Not very pleasant. I can't imagine doing it in super hot weather. It was about 35*C.
5 or so hours, in like 20* weather, so it wasnt that bad.
Not very long.
I'll take that shit off.
...Incirlik AB, Turkey Approx. May 00....
Iraq launched two scuds at southern Turkey which sent our base into Alarm Red MOPP 4.
We stayed in full gear for 5 hours while the scuds were in flight, landed (They crashed 300 miles away from us), then were assessed.
Then for the next two months we went EVERYWHERE with our C bag, a buddy, and a radio in case it happened again..
Durring the gas chamber at basic some of the guys' masks wouldn't seal, so for about 20 minutes it was straight CS gas in the face for them, snot coming out of their mouthpieces, I'm glad i did good Preventive Maintenence Checks and Services on mine
Oh, and i have pics haha
god more than i ever want to remember
Yeah... I remember those days. Walk in with the mask in the pouch, answer a few questions while hacking your lungs out, put the mask on, clear mask, answer a few more questions, leave. Fun times.
I fucking hated wearing the gas mask during alerts. We had at least one alert a month, and for the duration we'd be on 12 hour shifts. Many a day was spent with the entire shift swimming in my mask. Claustrophobia ftl...
we were the 2nd or 3rd flight to go through it, they tried using a lot of the shit, sucked big time but they didn't keep us in there long... just made us stand at attention and take in one big breath.
