I've never met one or anything. And I've always lived in beach/port towns. Do they really exist? :eek3:

Are they a secret society of plankers? The DKE of teh oshun?

    Anyone have experience in/with them?

They are career (civilian) sailors. Most of the MMs I've met have been during deployments because they run the refueling ships that keep the ships moving. If you like spending time out to sea and make some decent coin while doing it, then perhaps it's for you.

One of the guys that was in my squad during Warrior Transition Course was a MM. He was the ships engineer, and made well over $100K/year. He could pick and choose what ships he sailed on, and had a shitload of time off throughout the year. I think he graduated from some MM academy but that's about the extent of what I know about it.

Yeah I thought they recruited like the military, but it seems like you have to goto the MM academy.. which is $

You attend a local academy or whatever academy is closest to receive general training in Deck, Engineering and Steward departments through a combination of classroom and hand-on aboard a ship. 2 months prior to graduation, a student must choose what field he wants to work in, (deck, engineering, steward). Most training programs run about 8 months.

One of our LT HH-65 pilots was a merchant marine and then received his commision as a CG ensign. Not a bad deal if you don't want to go to the CG academy.

My step-brother is at the merchant marine academy, he didn't make it into the Naval Acadamy, which I'm glad, cause he was an asshole. I even told him that under no circumstances will I ever salute him.

I have a cousin that went through the MM Academy. He seems to enjoy it enough.
