    It is just AWD.

The system is pretty new, so there is not much in the way of long-term experience. Although, the old AWD E30s seem to be pretty popular and durable.

I'm not a fan of the BMW system. No LSD, so it relies on the brakes to distribute power to wheels with traction.

ACtually, he is correct. The E30 AWDs were "IX" models. ;)

If you're looking for all weather capability with no consideration towards handling, then go with the AWD system. Again, the new system hasn't been out for too long but I haven't heard of any reliability issues.

Now, if you are looking for the legendary BMW handling, don't do it. The AWD system ruins the great qualities that having a front-engine RWD combination and near 50/50 weight distribution will give you.

I would stay away from the 3 series AWD system, it's not comparable to AUDI or Subaru. However the xdrive (think that's what it's called) system in all other models including the new 5 is much improved.
