What's the best way to get rid of old electronics like computers, monitors, VCR's, printers, scanners, etc?

The first things that come to mind are giving them away or throwing them away but it doesn't make sense to give away something that's horribly outdated or a in less than acceptable condition. Throwing them away raises environmental concerns and it seems like a huge waste to me. Selling them is out of the question as it's too time consuming and it's likely that no one would want them anyway.

Is there perhaps a way to recycle their parts or have them refurbished/repaired so that they can be put to some use? Any suggestions/advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Some years back our city had a hazardous waste dropoff week for crap like that to be recycled. Maybe a recycling center will take them.

Put them on your street curb a few hours after your trash pickup. Let them sit out there for 7 days, and if no one picks them up by then the trash crew will get them.
