there are a lot of small things I don't like about it, but I haven't looked at many others lately to know if it's still better than the competition

I just noticed Whizzywig... looks nice

slow, default options kind of suck, the panels are customizable but it's a pain in the ass to do, has some weird quirks in the html it forces

I end up writing html in the plain text part and just let other people get stuck with the rich text part

    I'm gonna check out Whizzywig.

Whizzywig is a bit simpler than CKEditor, but it just seems nicer. more lightweight, prettier, etc.

    CKEditor

ckeditor looks pretty nice. i've been using tinyMCE for a while, but it seems pretty chunky as far as load time and what not.

Does HTML Purifier let you create some simple content without automatically wrapping it in Paragraph tags?

There are a bunch of options for that kind of stuff in both the rich text editors and in HTML Purifier, yeah.
