The Romanian AKs are a fun, cheap choice for beataround gun. Mags and ammo are also cheap. If you want to spend less than $350 for a durable semi-auto rifle, i think you'll get a lot of gun for the money with the SAR-1. (2nd link)

A used SKS would be cheaper than an ak and just as reliable. Stay away from the WASR-10, it won't take mags that are over 10 rounds unless you modify it, and for all that much trouble you might as well get the SAR-1. I have an SKS and an SAR-1. Both are great guns and a lot of fun to shoot.

how about a mauser? or a nagant? both are cheap, reliable, plentiful bolt-actions that are easy to shoot and maintain.

I thought the wasr-10 thing said that it accepted hi capacity mags, or does the -10 part stand for only holding 10 rounds?

If it holds 30 then I think I'll try to get that one, cheaper and looks better imo.

I went for an AR for my first rifle, cause if I was gonna buy a gun, I first of all wanted to know the complete workings of it, so I built my own AR. I also didnt want to have something that was unupgradeable, so I got an AR, cause there are so many aftermarket acessories for it. Go for an AR, it will rock your socks off.

    yes, that was most unexpected

on another note, i am thinking of getting an M1 Garand from Springfield for a first rifle, but the .30-06 might rock me more than i want so i thought a AR would be good

who makes the best/cheapest combos out there?

I went with the SKS as a first rifle choice. The AR-15 is banned in my state now I believe, so I didn't have much choice.

For a nice inexpensive rifle, I would get an SKS, the ammo is cheap, great accesories available.

If you want to spend more money, an AR is a pretty good choice, nice silouhette, accesories, and fairly cheap ammo. I would recommend for makers, Colt, Bushmaster & DPMS.
