I read the sticky but being a noob at this shit thats a tad confusing. I am finally going to get getting some free time in about two weeks so I can start working out again...

In the past I did the major NO NO and worked out and ate literally 700 calories a day..for me it actually worked for a while..but anyways...

I don't wanna be in the gym everyday for 2 hours..I want to just lose fat and tone a little...no need to get jacked and tan. I want to be in and out as fast as possible but still get a decent fat loss work out.

Focus on dieting, its the main factor contributing to fat loss. That being said, the best routine would be one that incorporates circuit training, IMO.

    This.

    Ehhh...
You want to preserve muscle on a diet. That said, metabolic work has a place. A mix of the two might be good, but if you're not an advanced lifter stick with low reps/highest weight you can handle with good form and let the diet/cardio do the work for you.

Do the sticky routine, and a 10-15 minute HIIT session (if you're doing it right, you shouldn't be able to go any further) 3-4 times a week and you will get cut if your diet is decent.

HIIT isn't the only way to skin a cat. And if he's as much of a newbie as he seems to be, multiple sessions of HIIT on top of regular lifting doesn't sound like a terrific idea.

High Intensity Interval Training. The way I do it (I am overweight and the pounds have been dropping) is I do 20 seconds of a full out 100%+ sprint, 40 seconds of your 55-65% max (heavy jog). This a high intensity calorie burn basically, if you can do this for longer than 15 minutes that means you probably should be doing longer durations or higher intensities.

Most people do more of a 30 second max - 30 second 60%, I am working my way up to that.

I read somewhere that shorter intervals 9-12 seconds is more effective for fat loss than 30 second. To increase intensity you might try shortening the rest rather than lengthen the sprint.

There's a place for both LISS and HIIT, and HIIT is very, very easy to overdo.
