So I read up a lot about how Omega 3 is a great fatty acid, and that it's "good for you" - but I'm interested more in why it's good for you. Where does it help out your body and how?

    Thanks for any info

just search google, i believe omega 3's are widespread now enough that the general public is into them and probably has info all over the web. they help disease prevention, skin, cardiac system, heart, lipids, etc.. but they are not something you will "notice" the effects of really except for maybe skin.

I've seen them mentioned a lot for weightlifting, do they provide any benefit when working out?

regulating hormones, and reducing inflammation are the two main benefits for body builders.

allows for a more fluid and efficient cell membranes ---> easier transport for things in and out of cells, better cellular metabolism.

    Improve cholesterol
Reduce risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis
    Better skin
    Better hair
Reduces inflammation (good for joint pain etc)
Might decrease recovery time from training
    etc etc etc

Plus, there are also links to improved brain function

and most people don't get enough omega 3 in their diet. Usually they get enough 6 and 9, but not enough 3. IIRC, you need all 3 in adequate quantities to be effective.

Its not necessarily needing all 3 in adequate quantities but getting them in the correct proportions. Omega 3 and 6 fatty aids compete for metabolism so that eicosanoids are either pro-inflamatory, anti-inflamatory, or neutral. The anti-inflamatory agent in this is a higher ratio of omega 3s.

In studies subjects who took 6g of fish oil/day showed a noticable decrease in body fat to those who stuck to a normal diet. Basically, Omega 3s have a bunch of beneficial effects and are probably the best type of fat for you. Its good to take fish oil because unless you are eating a significant amount of OCEAN CAUGHT fish in your diet, you aren't getting enough Omega 3s. Farmed fish have a significant decrease in omega 3s in their tissue.

What's a good place to get some fish oil pills (read: cheap). Also, recommended multi-vitamins + places to buy those, too?

Isn't the ideal ratio of omega 6: omega 3 something like 3:1 and most people that don't supplement with fishoil consume a ratio of 20:1?

In the article I linked to...

In American Diets, normal omega-6:omega-3 is 16.74:1, UK Diet 15:1, Japanese Diet (typically considered the most healthy in this regard) is 4:1. I can't find it in my reader right now (taking Physiology of Nutrition from a professor who apparently is one of the most respected in the field) but IIRC the ideal ratio is around 3:1.

EDIT: The mediterranean diet was 1-2:1 and the Paleolithic diet which is what our bodies were meant to have is ~.79:1

Any health supplement store should have them.

You probably want 1000mg fish oil capsules (i.e. 1 gram of fish oil per cap) but look at the % of DHA and EPA content too as the concentrations can differ.

Sometimes you will be better off getting cheaper fish oil with less DHA/EPA and simply taking more of them.. works out more economical than the super-strength, super-concentrated ones.
