I've had sporty cars all my life and can't help but want to try out a jeep for a while. How is the performance and reliability on these? Mind you I don't plan on doing alot of off-roading. Also, whats the gas consumption like on the 4 cyl and 6 cyl? Any comments or opinions would be appreciated.

Ive got a 97 tj and love it.

the differences between the early to late ones are minimal.

distributor to coil packs somewhere along the line, differnet motor castings, different dash, different seats.

but essentially the exact same from start to finish in the TJ production run.

and I agree, 4.0 all the way.

you plan to do any offroading? The TJ is VERY capable out of the box, and for < $500 is ready to roll on 33" tires with pretty decent clearance :)

I want one as a winter car and fun daily for the summer. I have my monster eclipse but the thing is only a weekend/track car. Is it a strange transition from sport car to jeep? How is the 4.0 on gas in 2-wheel and 4x4? What about reliability and maintenance? I checked out an 00 and 02 at the dealership while it was closed for the long weekend. I noticed all the hinges were rusted and quite a bit of underbody rust. Is this common? Thanks

Read up on later 4.0 head cracks before you buy. The 4.0 head casting changed at some point after 99-00 I believe and they CRACK.

If your used to sitting in the eclipse its doing to be wierd sitting in the TJ. Its kinda like goikng from a recliner to a bar stool, you'll be sitting up more. As far as gas in 4wd, depends on weither you use 4 hi or 4 lo. I typically use only 4 lo since converting over to 4:1 transfer case and seem to use more gas. Not much more in lo then hi in a stock TJ though.

i'm in the same boat as you man
driving tons of jeeps and other suv's, but have always owned sport cars.
I'm in the market for a wrangler or a ford explorer, but can't really find anything that i like just yet.
