Is it part of windows XP? Do i need it?

Or, even better, is there a site that shows/explains the minimum processes i need to have for XP to run fine?

svchost is short for "service host" and it's usually server-worker threads. You might have IIS, SMTP, FTP or other services installed that like to use processes like that.
