My boss is unhappy with analytics and wants something that can track everyone. Right now I presume I can't see where 40-60% of our hits come from because the conversions just come with no cookie. He would like to know where 100%(or as much as possible) of sales come from.

Is there anything out there more powerful the analytics?

    Thanks in advance.

What? If there isn't a referrer.. couldn't you assume they're direct hits?

For tracking referrer info GL finding better especially if you're on a budget. If you need like heatmaps and shit then I can give you some linkage.

Analytics is powerful, you're just using in incorrectly.

    I assume that.

We are just looking to see if there's a better system out there. I myself know there's always going to be the untrackable - i.e. phone, faxed in orders, people who change computers.

He just wants to know if there is better. I googled and googled only to find expensive software with bad reviews.

Also price isn't to huge of a factor - as long as it shows us something analytics cannot.

You realize that analytics is based of of urchin, which was a very pricey service prior to googles purchase?

If you want results, hire somebody who knows search marketing.

An Urchin 6 license, with advanced features is around $3500 IIRC.

My only big complaint with Google Analytics is how it does not update in real time. About 6 months ago, I tried using some other tracking and analytical program because it updated in real time, but it just did not have all the powerful features and the goal customizations I wanted.

If these are the conversions you are interested in tracking then set up different landing pages,

    For example:

If you have a radio ad, mention your domains as website.com/radio or something to that effect and that there is a 10% discount for ___ radio station listeners and make the page reflect that. "Welcome ___ station listeners. click here for your 10% discount!"

Just an idea I picked up from a landing page optimization book, might help you a little :dunno:

I'm aware. I use Analytics on a daily basis to improve us. I said that it wouldn't track 40-60% of people. He was not happy with that number and wanted to know if anything else was out there.

Yeah right now we are only doing CPC/SEO. Easily tracked until your throw in these situations:

    -Changing computers
    -Calling In
    -Faxing in
    -Sending to a purchasing department
    -Word of mouth
-Coming in to pick it up

If I based our conversation rate on Analytics we would be doing 60% less orders then we get per day.

where are you getting the 40-60% number? afaik, analytics tracks everyone that has javascript enabled, and it does not rely on cookies.

Most of those are offline conversions. Analytics is really meant for tracking online. You'd have to get pretty creative and it'll probably have to involve more manual data entry to use it for offline conversion tracking. (Never seen a javascript capable fax machine)

It's pretty easy to calculate your overall online to offline sales ratio, which in my experience stays fairly consistent across the board. Not the most accurate method, but it's simple and free.

A very effective method, as Phasm already suggested, is including unique discount codes for each advertising channel/campaign you want to track.

A good example is how grocery stores use membership cards for discounts (ie. Vic cards at Harris Teeter). They do this so they can track conversions and target ads to you (it's actually a 3rd party doing this). That's technically called customer tagging, basically same principle though. I had a summer job in High School with Catalina Marketing pulling cat5 and doing installs. They're the company that invented this system and have contracts with basically every major grocery store chain in the country.

That's what I was trying to suggest but I don't think I was clear enough :o
