I've started getting myself into a morning and nightly ritual for some exercise and have been doine some short jogging routes (about 2 or 3 miles) in the morning and short ( 1 mile ) jog at night.

I have a pool in my backyard that I hardly ever use, and I was wondering:

What would be more effective in the morning?

Doing 30 minutes of cardio by jogging, 30 minutes of cardio by swimming, or combining the two and doing a little jogging and a little swimming?

I'm just looking to slim down a bit because this desk job is kicking me off cycle.

The pool is a standard L inground pool (shaped like an L).

I guess it couldn't hurt to do both? Just want to see what you guys think is the best way to do cardio in the morning.

Yeah do both. Strenuous swimming is a great full body exercise that's lower impact.

this topic has been beaten to death time and time again

try them both and see which one you find more difficult...or as suggestion, switch them up..20 min run, 10 min swim

personally, swimming is more of a workout to me...this is because my form sucks, and my breathing sucks...I couldn't do it for 1/2 hour, but I can run for 1/2 hour

  4. Running is far superior to swimming in most respects. The fact that swimming is "low-impact" is not an advantage.

I prefer swimming, i enjoy the motion more, and strenuous swimming builds your back muscles.

running, because the water lowers your core temp so you don't burn as many calories

    :ugh:

do both. And don't jog the mile or 2 miles that you do. Start running them. Not a sprint, but at least a spirited jog and don't stop once you've reached your distance limit. Stop when you can't run anymore. You'll shed those pounds quicker. And the same goes for swimming. Don't just float around. Kick your legs and lunge forward. Good luck and take before and after pictures.

Being a former competitive swimmer I can attest that there is no workout out there that will burn as many calories as swimming. The problem is its as much anaerobic as it is aerobic. You have to eat a ton of calories in order for your muscles to recover enough to do it every day. That being said if you're looking to simply burn fat I'd stick with running. Personally I find it works better and is actually less stressful on my body.

That depends on if you want to be a better swimmer or a better runner. Just fucking do both, this question doesn't really mean jack shit.

I think swimming is better. It is more of a total body workout than running. Also I think if someone was to just swim and then try to run they would do much better than a runner who tried to swim. For my personal experience I can run ok, my endurance comes back pretty quick, but I can't swim 100 meters freestyle.

whatever gets your heart rate up and keeps it up for the duration of the workout. Then again, both are strenuous activities, so pick whichever one you stick with. Or switch it up.

If we all had taken the time that was used to make this thread, read the replies and add our own replies to it, and went running or swimming instead, the world would now be a better place.

    It is not.

What it comes down to is that running burns more calories than swimming and thus is better for weight loss. Swimming requires more muscular endurance, which is why its better for overall body development.
