Im in need of a zoom lens, after having the Rebel XTi for a while and using the Kit lens to learn the camera on ive found that cropping and zooming will only go so far. Im looking to spend about $200-$250 on one. ive seen some of the Cannon 70-300mm lens for about $150 but i think those are considered the Cheapie ones.

ive seen this one mentioned before in a couple threads, is it a good one?

mmm $1699 is way way out of my budget. Im not looking to be proffesional with photography, its more of a hobby, i just need 3 or so lenses that will fill the whole range

    I'd suggest saving and getting a used 70 200 f/4.0L for about $450-500.

Im currently selling a canon 100-300 4.5-5.6 USM for $200. It is a pretty good lens for the price. Minor CA wide open at 300mm, but other than that, not bad.

But like others said, save up and get the best. You wont regret it.

If it's just a hobby you'll be fine with whatever you can get for that money. I use a 28-105 and it is a good, all around lens. You have to really be shooting something serious to want to zoom 300mm.

i might have to go to the photography store and see how much Zoom 300mm really is. I have the Kit lens right now and i know i need more than 55mm. ive heard theres like 3-4 different 28-105 ones and your supposed to avoid one of them?

I have the Nikon 70-300mm 4-5.6G lens and for the price it's a good lens but you'll come to find out that under very low light you're gonna be wishing you had something with a wider aperture. I dont mind it during the day, it does what I want it to do but I've never really used it at night. So as long as you only plan on using it during the day go for the 70-300. For me, it was a gift so it's not like I'm kicking myself in the ass for not paying more for a better one or anything. I still plan on eventually upgrading to the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR but that's gonna have to wait.
