You've been told many times to stop using an AE. You know it's not allowed on OT.

you can run knoppix or pclinux, they can be had @ www.distrowatch.com, basically you burn them on a CD and it boots off the CD, dosent change the HD's settings, but the downside is that it wont save any changes...

kind of like emulation, but not really :o

kinda... it's a shell emulator, but can also run services and such. Not a completely independent or virtual os like vmware would provide.

Don't even try to run vmware on an older machine, it is more trouble than it is worth. Like was said, try Cygwin if you want to use *nix commands right in Windows. Or burn some type of live cd if you want the whole experience.

What do you want? A virtual machine or emulator? They are two completely different things.

With VMWare you create a virtual drive (or you can use a real drive) and you install a second OS on that drive. Then VMWare acts like a second computer, running the second OS from within your main OS.
