I came across this on Bud's... seems like a good deal, but I don't know much about it.

This Remington seems like a decent deal because it already comes equipped with a scope.
That way I don't have to waste more money putting one on... it's already there, and sighted in.

Also keep in mind, I don't hunt all THAT much. So I don't need some $2500 beefed up hunting rifle. I just want something nice that'll last a long time, and actually work. Remington's got a pretty good reputation of that. I just know absolutely nothing about this particular gun.

    Any other suggestions?

Less than $500, I don't have much of a budget. Deer.

I've heard not very nice things about the 770 series. I would suggest looking at Savage rifle. The scope/rifle combos are apparently quite good hunting setups :dunno:

My brother was looking at one of these. It looks OK, and I hear the bolt stops on them are revised because the old 710 had problems with the bolt stop failing. I don't know how accurate they are, but they sure are inexpensive.

The other package we looked at was the Savage, but it is considerably more expensive.

I had an H&R .308. I consistently did 3/4" groupings with it, but it was too front heavy and not well balanced for hunting. This was the synthetic-stocked "Survivor" model, a wood one might be a bit more balanced.

Yeah the Savage rifle/scope combo is over $100 moar... but if it's a better gun, I wouldn't mind spending the extra money.
I really just can't go over $500 though. Unfortunately. I just need a solid deer rifle.
Maybe someday I can afford moar snazzy stuff, but right now is a bit tight, and $500 is all I've got budgeted for a hunting rifle. :hs:

If you can get the Savage, do it. I think it's a better rifle than the 770 mainly because of the trigger.

The new Marlin bolt actions are getting surprisingly good reviews and are like $300. You could also get a Stevens 200 for around the same price.

I know it sounds picky for someone that doesn't have much money to spend, but I'm really not interested in buying a used gun.
Maybe if it was off a family member or a friend.

My next question is... should I stick with .308, or look for some other round?
My dad has a 30-30... but I just don't think that's really enough. I mean, I guess it's okay, but I want to ensure an animal goes down, for good, when I hit it.
And .308 is a proven large round. But is there anything else out there I should look into?
