What's a good, free anti-virus program that actually works?

AVG let me down. It didn't automatically download updates, and it didn't automatically scan for and delete viruses while I slept--as it was supposed to.

A virus brought my PC to its knees, and after 10 hours and a reinstall of Windows XP I'm finally back in business. What anti-virus program should I install? Free is preferable, but if I must pay for quality I will.

You're a fucking moron if you didn't have AVG set to do so -- it does by default. Unless your inet connection sucks bawls, then AVG did it's job... Even if your PC is off, it'll download updates when you boot up.

AVG has never let me, or the hundreds of people I've gotten to install it, down.

seriously, I'm running it on 2 of my 3 systems and when I look at the log files, it's auto update at 1am, full scan at 2am, every day. The only time it failed was when my router crapped out on me and it missed a day.

I recommend AVG to my clients that have ZERO intentions of maintaining their systems, because I know with AVG they won't have to. This is the same for me... I use it because I'm plain and simple lazy, and don't want to be bothered with updates. AVG does the work, I sleep better at night. :)

AVG is the best free antivirus solution. If you don't want to pay for antivirus, use AVG and don't turn off the self scanning and auto updates. This goes for any antivirus though. If you go out and buy something then turn off key components of your protection you'll have the same problem.

And if AVG isn't updating and you have it set right, try updating your software or checking your internet connection. Make sure your firewall is allowing it to update itself.

I wouldn't use the newer versions of Norton Antivirus. The last version I liked was 2003; all the newer versions require product activation and from what I've heard they like to hogtie your CPU. Maybe you can get Symantec Antivirus Corporate from your job or your college; it's more customizable, and you can disable the new setting that reloads the antivirus program automatically x minutes after you shut it down.

Also, please make sure you leave your firewall on at all times. The extra security is worth the expense of a few CPU cycles. If you want more control than Windows Firewall gives you, you can download Sygate Personal Firewall for free at www.download.com. You claim to have rebuilt your computer from a blank hard disk, which means that even though Jollyogre can't stand Sygate he might at least keep quiet about me recommending a solution that your average "Joe Idiot" wouldn't know how to use.
