Go to a range, rent and shoot as many as you can and buy the one that works best for you. I shot five guns the day I chose my HK USPc and I don't regret it one bit.

My vote is a Desert Eagle .50 AE. I'd prefer it with tiger stripes and gold accents. :big grin:

Glocks and XDs are great first handguns.
Anything in 9mm is great for learning and practicing.
A cheap rifle that shoots relatively cheap ammo for a first long gun.

Depends on what model and what caliber.
Recommended is a Glock 17 or 19, both 9mm, which is going to be cheapest.
The gun will run you around $500 brand new, but I've seen cheaper and more expensive.
The ammunition is all across the board. Depends on if you just want/need target ammo, which is what I would suspect, or hollow points for personal protection.
CCI Blazer and WWB (Winchester White Box, at Wal-Mart) are going to be cheapest (WWB @ Wal-Mart runs around $15 for 100 rounds, and shoots well and are relatively clean.

It's recommended that you clean your gun after every time you shoot it.
You can put it off if your last range session wasn't very long, but I always clean mine every single time, just for good measure. I like to take care of my stuff.

Glocks are extremely easy to disassemble and clean. As are XDs.

I just got my first gun last week. XD40 and love it. I agree with going out to the range and renting guns and trying them out. I shot both glock and the xd

The glock did not fit my hand as well as the XD. Thus I went with the XD.

A good cleaning kit. Maybe some extra mags.
Don't worry about tactical accessories just yet, if this really is something that's new for you... you need to learn how to shoot and handle a gun first.

Take a local firearms safety course if you can find one.
Maybe even a second one that specifies just handguns.

Definitely. Although those are usually offered at ranges.
But having your own is always better. Don't cheap out either.

Depending on your state's/area's laws, you may also want a case. Something to think about.

Ruger P series was my first handgun as well. Reliable and cheap.

Sig Pro is another to look at (shut up! I like them!) or a 226 (bit more money).
