A used beat up EX250. You can also take the MSF course, which they will provide you with a bike and helmet, to learn all the basics of riding.

    Honda CBR250RR, Suzuki GSF250V (Bandit).

Excellent bikes to 'get the feeling of riding'.

Once you are fast on a 250, you can be fast on any other bike.

Except they don't sell the 250RR, or the 250V in the US. :( If they did, I'd probably go buy one right now.

    Nasty :\
    zxr-250?
    gsx250f (across)?
    gpx250?

If you are passed the age where you need to show off.. Honda VFR/RVF 400s are fairly friendly. Kawasaki ER-5 and the already mentioned Suzi GS500 are both easy to ride and completely gutless 500cc twins.

Nope, no other 250s - only the Ninja 250 here. We get the GS500F from Suzuki and the Ninja 500 from Kawi, and that's about it in the sub-600 class.

We do get the Honda Hornet (over here called the 599) and Suzuki's SV650(S), which are considered good beginner's bikes here.

just get the 600cc and take it easy, you'll get bored as hell on a 250 in about a week!

If all you care about is stabbing at the throttle then you're dead on.

If you really want to be a good rider, you'll love the 250.
