I would argue that most "average" Americans probably couldn't run a whole mile and not walk. So I would say closer to 10 minutes, but I don't have any factual data to back that up. :hsughno:

if you can run it in 7:00-8:00, you should be happy with yourself. if you're looking for higher fitness, i would strive for 5:00-6:00 and try to keep that pace for 3 miles.

    In shape person-6:15-6:30
    Athletic person-under 7
    Average person-8:30
Everyone else-10-12, can basically walk that because that's what most would do.

    dunno about "average" 8:30.

i think someone that is active would still have to train a little to get 8:30.

unless i just suck at running really really bad.

The "average" person is terribly out of shape so I don't know about that 8:30 either. But almost anyone that has been consistently running for a significant period of time should be well under 8:30 for a mile.

do you want a decent tim or how long it would take the average american to do it?

I'd say a 7min mile is easily attainable for most people and would be decent.

I wonder how fast I could run a mile right now and I'm tempted to try it.

my best time in high school PE was like 7:30 or so. which i thought was pretty pathetic, and i hate running and wasn't in good shape. i'd say under 7 mins for a fitness person. normal person, just being able to run the entire thing would be impressive.

For the average, fit person I would say under 7.

When I was 18 I ran it in 5:27. I played sports all my life, but I never ran track or cross country. If you are active, you should easily be able to get under 7 :dunno:

average american? 30 minutes to allow time to stop at micky D's.

I have an FBI fitness scoring sheet in front of me though and to get the top score you need to run 1.5 miles in under 9 minutes...for males btw.

The average american probably needs 10-12 minutes to complete a mile.

Anyone who works out on a regular basis should be doing them in 6-8 minutes.
