350D body is shipping to me right now, and I'm trying to decide on a lens. The kit lens looks like it blows...

Whats a good all around lens (I'm going to be shooting for my colleges newspaper in August) that can be had for ~$300

    :dunno:

I've always suggested the tamron, I think its a great lens especially for the money.

or you don't use the decent Tamron lenses. 17-50 f/2.8, 28-75 f/2.8, 17-35 f/whateveritis are the only 3 worth buying.

Is this lens versatile enough that it could be my only lens for a few months??

Right now I'm spending about 1/4 of my summer earnings on photo gear, so the next time I will be recieving a lens will be for Christmas from my family. :hs:

Yeah, I used it for 5-6 months until I upgraded to a Canon 16-35 f/2.8L. If the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 was available when I bought the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 I'd probably still be using a Tamron. The 28 wasn't quite wide enough for the things I shoot so I sold it and went with a wider lens.

Either Tamron will hold you over until you decide to go with an L lens. They are very good value for the money in terms of image quality.

how does the canon 17-85MM f/4-5.6 IS stand up against the tamron 28-75 f/2.8?

slower and softer. Just an average lens that is overpriced because of the IS. I'd rather have a fast lens (constant aperture) than a slow lens with IS.

The tamron 17-50 2.8 is sharper than the 28-75. I have the 28-75 2.8 and I like it.... it spends the most time on my camera, but it's really not that sharp at 2.8. The 17-50 cost a little more and is of course a bit wider, but it makes sharper photos....

At least that's what this website says...

    http://www.photozone.de/

If you have to buy one and only one though..... I would step back and think about what I photograph the most and then pick either one of the tamrons. 17-50 sells for 448, 28-75 sells for 359 (it's cheaper because it's in a lower class).

well, just pulled the trigger on the 350D body, 1 GB Extreme III Sandisk Compact Flash, and Tamron f/2.8

BHphotovideo total (before rebated) and including tax for living in NY :squint: : $1,224 :noes:

Rebate: $100 on the 350, 30$ on the Tamron, and my mom said she'd pay half for the Tamron... comes to ~$1,000 (or roughly 1/3 of my summerly earnings)

You have until mid August. I haven't sent mine for the 16-35 and 70-200 yet even though I bought them when the rebate started (I think it was the first week of April).

Wait, I used the "Pay with PayPal" option... Do I need to have the $1,000 in my PayPal account, or will it automatically deduct the amount from my checking account which its linked to??? :hsd:
