Saturday I walked out the back door to the patio and there was a long black snake a few feet from me. didn't see it right at first. the snake was all black, 4 ft long. I didn't bring my 9mm pistol outside w/ me. My backyard is wood fenced. The snake got spooked and took off and went between a small gap at the bottom of where 2 wood slats meet the ground. Looking it up, I think it was a black pine snake (non poisonous) but at the time I didn't know that. If you were armed, would you of shot at it, done nothing, what?

I'd like to think if I was armed that I would of shot at it, but then i'd be worried about the neighbors calling the police, and the police charging me with something because they would of been like "your bullet could of ricocheted off of a rock or something"

so what would you have done?

I live in a city, poisonous or not I would have picked it up and took it to a rural area and let it go.

Why shoot it? Just let it go. :dunno:

They keep rats under control & stuff.

In that situation you'd hardly have time to draw & fire accurately enough to hit a small snake in a vital spot. Keep your eyes open. :nono:

That said, a few months ago I went through a gate in my mom's yard and on the way back through it I saw that I must have stepped over a coiled-up snake. Turned out to be a bullsnake but if it'd been a rattler I could've been in trouble. Just weird that it was right under the gate and I didn't see it. :noes:

There are only 3 types of poisonous snake in the area that I live (southeast) and except for the water moccasin none are that deadly. I generally let snakes be except if they are poisonous (not that hard to tell) or will not leave an area/threating pets. In that case I grab the .22 with shot shells or just a shotgun with bird shot to take care of it.

    Or a shovel works.

I'd of let it be. If they became a problem, the business end of the shovel does good.

:werd: snakes keep the rodent, bug etc population under control I rather have the snakes around. If its poisonous and in the yard I might relocate it to keep my dogs away from it.

I got a rattle snake the other day with the pliers on my Leatherman. Then I dropped off the body with my sister, she wanted the skin for something or other. It's still in her fridge haha.

    Quick rule of thumb:
Snakes with round eyes are nonpoisonous
Snakes with squinty eyes are poisonous.

Venomous snakes have their poison sacs on their upper jaw beneath their eyes - the sac makes their eyes appear squinty.

But don't kill a snake unless you have to - just leave 'em be.

    Leave one in the yard?

It beats getting the cops called for discharging a firearm in your neighborhood over a snake that frightened you.

If the snakes not poisonous why kill it? Would you rather have mice/rats running around?

I've killed three snakes in my life, and I grew up in the woods, and now I live out far enough that there are a few snakes in the area. I saw one just a week ago in the backyard.

That being said, two that I killed were copperheads (poisonous) and the other had managed to make its way into the house, and by the time I got it out it was REALLY pissed. The one copperhead got shot by my bb gun, the second I don't remember, and the one that was pissed I tried to kill with a shovel, but could only use it to block the snake from attacking me. I ended up tossing a friend my keys and he ran it over with the jeep. All others I've left alone.
