my gf's comp suddenly went from 20gb free to around 6, still shows it as 80gb in size. :wtf: ran adaware, spybot, nod32, registry clean, defrag, disc cleanup, etc.

    search for *.log

I've seen log files that were pretty big..... not 15gb, but it's something to check.

also, has her computer crashed recently?

What have you checked for thus far? I don't feel like shooting in the dark.

do what i do, look at the folders in the c: drive, select a few of them and view the properties. you should find your culprit from there

Run a search using XP's built in search function. You can specify file sizes in it.

Ditto. If the machine has crashed lately, there could be a dump file on the drive...

you can also try ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com
run the cleaner, just don't clear the form autocomplete data (usernames and addresses in online forms) or cookies (stores passwords for websites and such).

Spacemonger will scan the drive and graphically you'll see what's eating the data, like the biggest folders e.g.

A folder with tons of crap in it is not going to show up as a single hit in a file size search.

I'm wondering if the restore size settings got messed with.
Recycle bin and restore points can each be set to pretty large percentages of the drive.

Yup. Right when a DL starts all that space is allocated already.

Does it take a lot of messing around to get it to fly?
I hate learning curves with secondary programs.
