I'm looking for a new vehicle soon since my car just isn't cutting it for work. I need to pull a trailer with whatever I get. Before I thought I needed a fairly beefy truck, and was looking (and still am) at the Nissan Frontier, however I've done a little homework and I won't be needing to pull as much as I thought I would. Realistically it'd be closer to 4000lbs or maybe even a little less.

I'm open to both truck and SUV suggestions, though I don't want to go crazy expensive with it...the Frontier would be at the upper end of my price range.

I would not want to tow 5000lbs reguarly with any midsize truck. However for an occasional trip it would be okay.

If you're going to regularly tow 5000lbs or you expect heavy windows or steep grades then I strongly recommend a half-ton truck.

However, within the midsize segment, I do believe the Frontier is the best.

Like I said, I wouldn't be towing at the max 5000...4000 or a little less would probably be closer to the mark.

I really like the Frontier, and I'm definitely considering it, but the GF would prefer it if we had an SUV...and an SUV would be practical for our situation, so I don't want to rule one out.

    then get what you want.

used 4runner or pathfinder are two vehicles to consider. The pathfinder has the same awsome v6 as the frontier. I don't care for the v6 in the 4runner, but the v8 is very nice.

my CRD will pull that amount just fine ... and diesel ftw ...

    (2005 Jeep Liberty diesel)

mid size SUV ... 25-30mpg's (non towing) ... tows 5000 lbs easy

no matter what you look at ..check out the diesel option ..towing with a gasser sucks the gas like nobodys business. Diesel mileage does not go down with tow weight like gassers do.

I've been looking at the Liberty, and it looks pretty good. I've had somebody tell me that they're crap but I haven't gotten an explanation why yet so :dunno:

Also, I'm probably going to buy something brand new if it makes any difference.

omg that's even more fail and aids than trying to tow with a "smart car".

    Explanation why?

Maybe I should add that I wouldn't be towing every day with this...it would be on average once every two weeks, and rarely farther than a couple blocks. I don't know if that makes a difference to you or not but :dunno:

Do yourself a favor... Get a truck if you want a truck. Get a SUV if you want a SUV.

Regardless of towing or not, the Nitro is a huge piece of shit.

I mean honestly... Since the nitro is not a truck, we will exclude those for this question... But if you're looking at an SUV, what possible reason would you choose a Nitro over either a Pathfinder or a 4Runner. Honestly, I can't think of a single good reason. And please don't say cost. The Pathy and 4Runn are gonna hold their value sooooooooo much better.

Brand new .. can't get the diesel anymore. only sold stateside in 05 and 06 (emissions regs)

the main things that go wrong with the diesels are egr issues ...

that and the purist off-roaders get all homophobic at anything that isn't SFA

I wouldn't get a gasser anything if you do even any moderate amount of towing ...

Just get the Frontier. I have an '05 with almost 50k on it and it runs like new, goes like a bat out of hell, and can easily pull what you're planning on pulling.
