Personally I'm an Nvidia man. I've had both cards but seem to run into less problems using Nvidia rather than ATI. That said, either card will probably run F.E.A.R. just fine. Keep in mind what you are playing is a demo not the final product. So some streamlining is still being done on the game. Which is in part causing some of the issues you might be having.

Never played Farcry so don't know how graphic intensive it is.

No, really, I've seen much more problems with nVidia rigs than ATi based systems. My 9700 Pro is working flawlessly, but my bro's 5900XT is giving him an error that "A DirectX 7-class card or greater" is required to run a Source engine based game.

The X800 XL is a much better deal for the money anyway.

the only diff i see is that the ati has open gl 2.0 and the nvidia has open gl 1.5 along with the ati being 20mhz slower for the memory clock. It's a tough decision

you can overclock the 6800gt to 6800 ultra levels easily with coolbits, but if you do i would suggest a graphics card cooler. another reason to purchase the 6800gt is that in a majority of benchmarks i have read, the 6800gt has done better than the ati, as well as having more pipelines etc, its an overall better card and it will show with age.

It says they both have 16 pipelines...the only benchmark i saw that the 6800 did better in was doom 3...but that was in a cnet review

I would take the NVidia over the ATi any day. ATi has definantly improved since there issues a few years ago, but NVidia is still > * when it really comes down to it.

First off, something is wrong with your brothers system because a 5900XT is DirectX9 card, so it shouldn't have an error with Source. Try reinstalling chipset and videocard drivers.

Secondly your comparing old technology, yes when the 9700 pro was released it was leaps and bounds better than anything of nVidia's. But things change in three years.

When 6800GT's were more money, yes the X800XL was a better deal however now not so. The 6800GT is just as a fast of a card, that supports shader 3.0 unlike ATI.

    Get the 6800GT.

Brand preferance isn't really a big thing. Except i do say BFG is better because of the lifetime warranty.

far cry is cpu limited so you will still have problems with that if you're playing high settings.

you also won't be able to play either of those games at high res w/ AA and AF (it's just not possible .. yet)

EVGA has lifetime warranty now too

yup, it's the 6800's without a prefix that have less pipes (12 compared to 16)
Nvidia's cards have been better performers in OpenGL, whereas ATI cards have been better in Direct3D. Doom 3 is OpenGL, and HL2 is Direct3D, which is why Nvidia's cards generally perform better in Doom 3 and ATI in HL2

I'd say go for the eVGA 6800 GT. eVGA is a good brand. stay away from Chaintech and probabbly XFX. maybe XFX is better now, but in the 5000 series cards they were never very good.

from what I've seen, Nvidia has a better advantage in OpenGL than ATI has in Direct3D when it comes to 6*** vs X*** cards. plus they have PS 3.0 for better picture quality.
