Considering you reload so ammo cost isnt really an issue. You already have a 5.56 16" for all around shooting and you are looking for a longer range upper for your lonely lower. What caliber would you choose?

I would probably go .458 SOCOM. I also have no real reason for that choice.

For me it would probably be between the 6.8 and 6.5 since from what I've seen/read 6.8 SPC is the most popular but 6.5 Grendel is made almost entirely for accuracy.

What is a longer range? Is this more of a target gun or do you have an eye toward self defense for it?

I'm leaning toward 6.5 or 458. I just want something bigger than 5.56. It's gonna be an expensive project too because I want nice optics to go with it

no self defence at all. It would be a 100+ yards target gun.

For target use I'd look at the 6.5, for defense I'd look more at the 6.8

Anyone have experience with the 458? I wont be shooting more than 200 yards so it is a good possibility

the stuff I've read about the development of the round. This will actually be my first on the AR platform though. I just didn't want a .223.

everyone needs a 223 tho. I think I might go with a 6.5. 458 would be cool but I would gt tired of shooting that big of round after a while and when I go to the range I shoot hundereds of rounds. I gotta keep my credit card locked away tho for now :hs:

Just the brass runs more than a dollar a casing some places. Rumor has it that there's not much life left in the cartridge outside of the reloading world.

why are you wasting your time with anything over 223/5.56 if you're not shooting past 200 yards?

    404 long range not found.

Sounds more like a "omg this gun can shoot so far and cost so much" project.

I'd get something big bore then, because you'd be wasting time and money on something meant for 600+ yds (or whatever) if you're not going to shoot it further than 200. You can easily do that with the 5.56 you currently have.

A big bore AR would be badass :o
